| | Citation: | id Software founder and technical director, John Carmack, has previously shown his like of the Blu-ray format, saying that the DVD format is too small to fit a game like RAGE on.
"It is multiple discs. We think that it's going to cram onto two discs right now." Carmack said in a February 2009 interview. "We've been spending a lot of effort on an extra compression method for it, and profiling where we can cut on that."
However, in the recent issue of Game Informer, Carmack's brought up the same topic once again, saying that the open-world aspect of RAGE wouldn't do so good on two discs.
"We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just...we can't cut it into a third like that. We can cut it into two pieces. We've got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn't make an arbitary cut," Carmack told Game Informer.
DOOM 4, on the other hand, will be on three DVDs though, due to the game's linear single-player campaign.
"Doom 4 is being set up so that it's almost certainly going to be cut up to 3 DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they've got the ability because of the way it's structured," Carmack added.
Regarding id's thoughts on each platform, Carmack added "There's a little bit more theoretical raw performance on the PS3, so we've got a little bit more headroom." He added: "The 360 was easier to certainly to get to where we are now. More sweat equity had to be put into the PS3."
id's lead programmer Robert Duffy also commented: "We're getting along with the PS3 really well. We took a lot of time early on in the development cycle on learning it." |

------------------- |
